The Remembrance of Things Past

The Holga camera was designed by T. M. Lee in Hong Kong in 1982. It is a cheap mass produced toy camera that was aimed at the working class. In this project the Holga provided space for exploration and investigation with photography.

The Holga produces images that are a blend of planning and accident. There is a certain unpredictable character to the camera which leads to unexpected light leaks which add to its charm. However, great care has been taken during processing and printing to ensure clear evidence and commitment to fine black and white printing.

The images produced are dream like and nostalgic, an effect highlighted by the use of black and white film. They evoke a sense of recollection, of looking back down the years to one’s childhood memories.

This work began at Allt-yr-yn View. Allt-yr-yn View is situated 10 minutes from the centre of Newport. It is a nature reserve that has ancient woodland, meadows and five ponds. The reserve is owned by Newport City Council and managed by WING - Wildlife in Newport Group.

The project developed into a substantial exploration of places and scenes that resemble childhood experiences which is then realised by the format and presentation of the work. The subject calls upon the traditions of the family album and our reliance upon the photograph as a substitute for the event. When our memories of people and places fade and blur, the photograph may be all that remains as a replacement.
