The Summer Isle Project
The photographs that were produced for this project are a document of the way of life in the Outer Hebrides covering the traditional and the move towards modernization of the island and the interaction between old and new in the isolated communities on Lewis. Lewis is the northern part of the largest island of the Western Isles. The full name of the island is Lewis and Harris but the two parts of the island are separated by mountains and are to all effect two separate entities. The Islands dramatic landscape and weather make life on Lewis often hard and dangerous despite its beauty the island however this attracts people from the cites of the United Kingdom to seek a simpler and more traditional way of life. Immigration of incomers to the island has maintained the population as many of the children have left the island as soon as they are old enough. With the way of life on Lewis been maintained only by a hand full of islanders and incomers it is possible that this island will soon become as homogenized as the rest of the United Kingdom.
